A Few Political Notes from DrTed

 

Scott W. Brinkman (R) House District 32 might not be filing for re-election.  A potential Democratic candidate for this office provided me with this information. If true (which I doubt), then is Mr. Brinkman thinking about running for Mayor of Louisville?

I have heard rumors about other possible candidates for Mayor of Louisville.  A very well respected political operative has told me that Anne Northup is contemplating a run for mayor.  Bruce Lunsford is also (according to the rumor mill) thinking about running  for this office.  I have been told by those who know Mr. Lunsford that he IS NOT going to run.

CQ Politicsreported that the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) spent $20,000 in coordinated funds for the Kentucky senate race.  Looks like Kentucky will once again be a prime senatorial battleground.

Governor Beshear has called a special election for February 2^ndfor Jimmy Higdon’s vacant seat in the Kentucky House of Representatives.

Electrical Workers Endorse Greg Fischer(D) for Mayor of Louisville: Fischer Wins Fifth, Sixth Labor Endorsements in As Many Weeks

 

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers announced today that they have endorsed Greg Fischer for Mayor of Louisville. The IBEW joins four other labor unions who have given their early support to Fischer since his campaign launched October 31.

Echoing the sentiments of earlier endorsers, IBEW Local 369 Business Manager Bill Finn and IBEW Local 2100 Business Manager Curtis Stratton both cited Fischer’s ability to address the jobs issue as the deciding factor in the Electrical Workers’ decision.

“The IBEW recognizes that Greg is an innovator,” said Finn. “The future of both our industry and community depends on fresh thinking and new ideas to create jobs and Greg Fischer has spent his whole career turning ideas into action.”

“His track record of success in business growth and job creation is simply tremendous,” added Stratton. “Greg has launched, built or invested in more than 15 area firms and created more than 1,000 jobs in our area. Greg will get Louisville working again.”

“I am honored to have the IBEW’s support,” said Fischer. “My background as an entrepreneur in manufacturing, technology and construction has shown me first-hand the importance of electrical workers to our economy. Bringing small and mid-sized businesses together with organized labor, especially the construction trades, will be crucial to generating new jobs in 2010 and beyond. I welcome the IBEW to our campaign and look forward to working with them.”

The IBEW represents more than 4,900 active and retired members in the Louisville area, bringing Fischer’s total Labor support to more than 20,000 workers.

Greg Fischer has also been endorsed by the United Auto Workers, Laborers’ Local 576, the National Conference of Firemen and Oilers/Service Employees International Union (NCFO/SEIU) and Kentucky Laborers’ District Council.

Endorsement News from the Greg Fischer(D) Campaign for Mayor of Louisville

Our campaign kickoff and headquarters open house event is less than 48 hours away but I wanted to share some breaking news with you. 

Today, the United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 862 announced their endorsement for our campaign and belief in my ability to create the jobs that Louisville needs.  The UAW's endorsement is hugely significant, as the union represents more than 10,000 active and retired members in the Louisville area.

On top of that, an impressive coalition of very strong state and local elected leaders from the South End of Louisville banded together to endorse my candidacy.  This group, consisting of Kentucky State Senators Denise Harper Angel and Perry Clark; Kentucky State Representatives Larry Clark, Charlie Miller, and Ron Weston; and Shively Mayor Sherry Conner, will be in attendance on Saturday to announce their support for our campaign. 

Louisville Councilman and Mayoralty Candidate Jim King Asks Lawyers to Grade His Daughter, Judge Katie King

Jim King, the Louisville Metro Council member has sent an e-mail to lawyers asking those who have had “a good experience” on cases handled by his daughter, Jefferson District Judge Katie King, to “please grade her accordingly” on the Louisville Bar Association’s current judicial evaluation.

The request — which attorneys say appears unprecedented — has divided lawyers and ethics experts, some of whom defend it, while others say that it inappropriate and could skew the evaluation’s results.

Open House and Fall Festival to Feature Fischer’s Political Endorsers

 

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Louisville mayoral candidate Greg Fischer announced today that he will be hosting an Open House and Fall Festival so that supporters can meet his campaign staff, tour campaign headquarters and hear from state and local elected officials why they support Greg Fischer for Mayor. The event will take place Saturday, October 31 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 300 Distillery Commons (next to Headliners Music Hall, on Lexington Road).

 

The Open House and Fall Festival is a family-friendly event packed with food, music and games where supporters can bring their children dressed in costume for trick-or-treating.

 

“We thought this would be a fun way to recognize a couple of important milestones for the campaign and at the same time to celebrate the fall season,” said Fischer. “We’re celebrating the opening of our headquarters, the one-year countdown to Election Day and the endorsement of some of the community’s most respected political leaders. It will be a great day for our campaign.”

 

Fischer for Mayor opened its office September 21. The event will take place rain or shine.

Special prosecutor named to study King complaint, reports The Courier-Journal

Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway appointed a special prosecutor Friday to review a criminal complaint filed against Louisville Metro Councilman Jim King over $135,000 he gave his daughter during her 2008 judicial campaign.

Conway asked Shelby County Attorney Hart Megibben to l ook into the complaint against King and his daughter, Katie King, and decide if further investigation is warranted.

The Kentucky Registry of Election Finance ruled last week that the Kings had made a “non-knowing” violation of state campaign finance laws. Katie King won her race and is now a Jefferson district judge.

This week the Kings began mediation sessions with the registry over potential fines and the wording of the final disposition of the case.

Rumor Has It: Is Dave Armstrong Giving Thoughts About The Louisville Mayoral Race?

The big question this morning is whether or not Dave Armstrong is taking a look at running for Louisville Metro Mayor. There are sources saying that he is and many politicos are encouraging the former Louisville Mayor and Kentucky Attorney General  to run.

Armstrong, a former Jefferson County Judge Executive and Commonwealths Attorney, compiled a record of high accomplishment during his four year term as the old Louisville's last mayor.

He is consisitently given high marks for his work on downtown development and he had a strong record of taking care of the basic neighborhood needs.

Armstrong also knows the county areas outside the old city limits very well, as a result of his nine years as Jeffeson County Judge-Executive. 

His entry immediately would make him the front runner in the current crowded Democratic field. He would quickly become an alternative for voters, especially in the central, south and southwest areas of Louisville, and he is well respected in other areas.

He is respected by Chamber of Commerce and Labor leaders alike.

Armstrong currently is head of the Kentucky Public Service Commission, a job he likes very well, but could respond to the call to run. It may all come down to family before he would make a run.
