Whichbegsthequestion:whywouldBushandleadingDemocratspushanissuethatseemsdestinedtoalienatekeyelementsoftheirbase,with2008justaroundthecorner?AsmallpieceintheNewYorkTimesthisweekofferssomeusefulbackground:ithasalottodowith

TheTimesnotesthat,ashasoftenhappenedinthiscountry,there’salargegapbetweenyoungandoldvoters.ButtheTimesalsopointsoutthatnow,there’sanewlayertothe“generationgap”—it’salsoaracegap.Oldervoterstendtobewhiter,whilethefuturevotersofthecountryaremoreLatino,African-AmericanandAsian-American:

Accordingtothelatestfigures,80percentofAmericansoverage60arenon-Hispanicwhites,comparedwithonly60percentamongthoseintheir20sand30s,and58percentamongpeopleyoungerthan20.
