Civic leader and businessman Willie Bright’s legacy of community spirit, unity, friendship and good food -- he loved ribs and barbecued chicken – was celebrated Saturday during the fifth annual Willie B. Bright Community BBQ at Baxter Square Park in the Russell neighborhood.
About 700 people showed up for the festivities at the tree-lined park, located at 12th and Jefferson streets, and participated in a variety of activities for children and adults, including basketball, cornhole, sack races, dominoes and face painting.
“In the spirit of councilman Bright, the purpose of the barbecue is to bring people in the community together from all walks of life to enjoy each other’s friendship and their fellowship,” said Louisville Metro Council President David Tandy, who has hosted the annual event since Bright’s death in 2005, three years after Bright won the Metro Council’s District 4 seat in his first run for public office.
