LOUISVILLE - For the second time today, United States Senate candidate Jack Conway scored a decisive victory over his chief primary opponent Daniel Mongiardo.
Following a sound performance at the Lexington Forum debate this morning, Conway once again proved he is the candidate with a record of positive results for Kentucky while Mongiardo was left to throw useless attacks in an attempt to gain political ground.
This discourse is just another example of the contrast between the candidates. While Conway has consistently run a campaign based on his plans to create jobs, cut the deficit and bring accountability to Washington, Mongiardo's campaign has avoided discussion of the issues in lieu of constantly being on the attack.
"I got into this race to create opportunities for Kentucky's future and that is where our focus has remained. In the last several days, a clear difference has emerged between me and my opponent on health care reform - I support it because it provides access to health insurance for at least 654,000 Kentuckians who are currently uninsured and Daniel stands with Mitch McConnell, Rand Paul and the Tea Party who want to kill it," Conway said.
Prior to the evening debate, Paul led a crowd of 300 Tea Party protesters at the state Capitol who were calling on Conway to join the attorneys general of 14 other states in a lawsuit to overturn health care reform. Conway has denounced the lawsuit as, "based on questionable legal principles and a waste of taxpayer dollars," and has refused to join.
The candidates also addressed their record in public service. As Attorney General, Conway has created a cybercrimes unit to keep our children safer on the internet, participated in one of the largest prescription drug round-ups in the state, taken on big oil and pharmaceutical companies that were defrauding consumers and saved taxpayers over $200 million.
Conversely, in over a decade in public service, Mongiardo failed to pass a single piece of legislation that created jobs. When appointed to the task force charged with instituting health information technology in Kentucky - Mongiardo's self-proclaimed "priority" issue - he missed 70 percent of the meetings and is on record saying the position was eventually "taken from under him" by the governor.
"Daniel Mongiardo has claimed repeatedly over the years that he wants to make Kentucky a leader in e-health but when he was given the chance, he didn't even bother to show up for work most of the time," Conway said. "I consider elected office a public trust. I have worked hard to build a record of positive results for Kentuckians and I feel confident if you compare my record to my opponent's you'll find I am the candidate in this race you can trust."
