Whatadifferenceanewadministrationmakes.DoesanyonedoubtthatErnieFletcherwouldhavesignedsomethinglikeSenateBill1,ifMajorityLeaderDanKellyandSenatePresidentDavidWilliamshadmanagedtogetthethingpassed?

It'ssupposedtobetheSenateGOPhonchos'toppriority,althoughtheyhavetreateditlikejustanotheropportunitytograndstandagainstschoolreform.It'safavoriteofthosewhowouldliketodiscreditthepublicschoolsandde-legitimizeteacherorganizations,inordertoopenthewayforpubliclyfinancedprivateschoolvouchers.

ThegoodnewsisthatSteveBeshear,notErnieFletcher,isgovernornow,andhepromisedtovetoanysuchbill.HecouldhavedoneaDavidWilliamsnumberandsniffedthathe"foundlittleinterest"inSB1.Instead,helaidoutthespecificreasons--sharedbroadlyintheeducationcommunity--foropposingthisverybadbill.

TakingastandwithhimwasHousebudgetchairmanHarryMoberly,D-Richmond,whopredictedaftertheGovernor'spressconferencethatthelegislationwon'tmakeitoutoftheHouse.
