THEDSCCSAYS:MCCONNELLMAKESSECONDAPPEARANCEINITSHALLOFSHAMEFORHIS“NAY”VOTEAGAINSTTHE“SCHIP”BILL

KentuckySenatorMitchMcConnellmakeshissecondappearanceintheDSCCHallofShameforputtingGeorgeBushaboveKentuckychildren.ThursdayMcConnellvotedagainstthebipartisanChildren'sHealthInsuranceProgramReauthorizationbill-abillthatwillprovidehealthinsurancetomillionsofkidsnationwide.

Kentuckycurrentlyhas111,000uninsuredchildrenandtheproposedbillwouldcoveralmosthalfofthosechildren.ButPresidentBushstaunchlyopposesthelegislationdespitestrongbipartisansupport.SowhenMitchMcConnellwasfacedwithchoosingbetweenPresidentBushandKentucky'suninsuredchildrenwhodidhepick?GeorgeBush.

Perhapsevenmorebaffling,McConnellsidedwithBushdespitethePresident'sflawedrationale.Asonecolumnistpointedout,"evenconservativeSenateRepublicanssuchasUtah'sOrrinHatchandIowa'sCharlesGrassleyhavecomplainedthatBush'sconcernsare,toputitpolitely,overstated."GrassleyalsodescribedthePresident'schargesthatthebillgoestoofarandcoverschildrenfromwealthierfamiliesas"factuallyincorrect,"whileHatchadded,"We'retalkingaboutkidswhobasicallydon'thavecoverage…Ithinkthepresident'shadsomeprettybadadviceonthis."

MitchMcConnellhasearnedhissecondspotintheHallofShameforputtingPresidentBush'spartisanpoliticsabovetheuninsuredchildrenofKentucky.AndwithMcConnellupforre-electionin2008,hejustmightfindthatKentuckyvotersaren'twillingtovoteforaSenatorwhowouldratherrubberstampGeorgeBushthanstandupforkids.
